The project will create a new research focus at ANU in Language Contact and Acquisition, bridging language documentation and language acquisition. It responds directly to major questions in Linguistics, Linguistic Anthropology and the Psychology of Language – why are languages today structured how they are? And how are they transmitted through generations, with or without change? The project spans documentation and acquisition of a new mixed language and acquisition of traditional Australian languages. The importance of research intersecting language contact, documentation and acquisition is gaining recognition, and shows that one cannot be fully understood without the other.
