Study overseas

There is no better way to learn a new language than being immersed in the language and its cultural setting on a daily basis. You will benefit in many ways from an exchange – linguistically, academically, personally, career-wise and cross-culturally.

The Spanish Studies Program encourages students to study at an ANU partner university in Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru or Spain. Exchange agreements exist with the following universities:

Chile

Colombia

Spain

Mexico

We are currently working on establishing agreements with:

course offerings

Spanish-speaking universities offer the following types of courses for exchange students:

Regular courses offered in Spanish:

To get credit for your Spanish major, you should choose courses where the focus of the study includes the Spanish language in areas such as linguistics, literature, history, politics and culture, and should be related to Spanish-speaking countries.

Spanish language and culture courses for international exchange students:

The following universities offer specialised language and culture courses for international students (some may incur additional charges):

Prerequisites

The best time to go on exchange and the type of courses students should take depend on your knowledge of Spanish language and culture.

The majority of students go on exchange in the first semester of their third year of study. While on exchange, they complete electives rather than core courses towards their degree.

Please note that, in order to study successfully in a foreign-language environment, you must meet minimum language requirements. You will need to obtain a language approval form signed by the Spanish language convenor.

Students are expected to have completed at least intermediate-level Spanish classes (e.g., Intermediate Spanish I) at the time of their departure.

SPAN2001 (Continuing Spanish I) students applying for exchange on semester 1 the year after are expected to enroll in both SPAN 2002 and a thematic course open to second year students (e.g., SPAN 2601 or SPAN 2102).
