Professor Diana Slade, PhD, MA, Grad DipEd, BA, RSA Certificate
Director of the ANU Institute of Communication in Health Care
Over the past ten years evidence has been mounting that ineffective communication at all levels of the healthcare system leads to poor patient outcomes, including serious illness and death, and clinician dissatisfaction. We have established the ANU Institute for Communication in Health Care to bring together international experts in medicine, health sciences, linguistics, health communication, nursing, medical education, allied health and sociology. Through its collaborative, cutting edge cross-disciplinary research, ICH will offer practical, applicable and relevant strategies and solutions that will impact clinician practice and education internationally.
I feel honoured to be the first Director of this unique interdisciplinary and international Institute. I believe that with such strong Institute membership we are well positioned to confront the challenges of healthcare in an increasingly complex world.
Dr. Elizabeth Rider, MSW, MD
Chair of the Institute for Communication in Health Care Advisory Board
The establishment of the ANU Institute for Communication in Health Care is an exciting and inspiring response to increasing recognition of the central role of communication and relationships in the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate healthcare.
ICH is unique as it brings together perspectives from international, interprofessional experts and leaders --healthcare researchers, educators and practitioners with linguists and communication specialists. With its impressive involvement of international members, ICH provides an ideal opportunity to transform the way we communicate and relate to patients and colleagues in healthcare systems around the world.
