Antoninianus of Carinus
3.719 g. AD 283-285
Obv.: Bust of Carinus r., radiate, draped, cuirassed, bearded. IMP(erator) C(aesar) M(arcus) AVR(elius) CẠṚINVS AVG(ustus).
Rev.: Emperor in military dress standing r. with transverse spear in right hand and globe in left. SAECVLI FELICITAS. Below the globe, D.
On Carinus cf. 1966.66. He was left by his father Carus as emperor in the West, when Carus and Numerianus left for Parthia in AD 283. After their deaths Carinus was challenged by Diocletian and was murdered in AD 285. The reverse, military in type, proclaims the ‘felicity of the age’.
The coin was struck at Lugdunum (Lyon). The mint-mark D indicates the workshop at that mint responsible.
