Antoninianus of Tetricus I

2.980 g. AD 273-274

Obv.: Bust of Tetricus I r., radiate, draped, bearded. IMP(erator) C(aesar) TETRICVS P(ius) F(elix.) AVG(ustus).

Rev.: Salus standing l., draped, holding patera (shallow dish for offerings)in right hand over a serpent at an altar, and holding an anchor in her left. SALVS AVGG (= Augustorum).

Minted at Cologne.

Tetricus I, who sometimes associated his son Tetricus II with him in his rule (hence the plural) ‘AVGG.’ on the reverse: ‘welfare of the emperors’), was the last emperor of the break-away Gallic Empire begun by Postumus in AD 259 (cf. 1966.64). He surrendered to Aurelian in AD 273 and was led in triumph through Rome, but afterwards was allowed to enjoy his senatorial rank and a civil appointment.

Note how in the last stages of the Gallic Empire the antoninianus had been completely reduced to base metal (cf. 1968.07).
