Antoninianus of Trebonianus Gallus
3.215 g. AD 251-253
Obv.: Bust of Trebonianus Gallus r., radiate, draped, cuirassed, bearded. IMP(erator) C(aesar) C(aius) VIB(ius) TREB(onianus) GALLVS AVG(ustus).
Rev.: Pietas draped standing l. with both hands raised and an altar in front below. PIETAS AVGG( = Augustorum).
Trebonianus Gallus was governor in nearby Moesia when Traianus Decius was killed in battle on the Danube in AD 251. He was hailed as emperor by his army, and made a quick peace with the Goths. He took as fellow emperor Decius’ son Hostilian and then, after Hostilian’s early death, his own son Volusian. Hence the plural ‘AVGG.’ on the reverse: ‘dutifulness of the emperors’.
This coin was probably struck at the mint of Milan, which seems to have begun operation under Traianus Decius.
