Attic Black-Glaze Skyphos (Attic type)

From the Woite Collection; probably from the area of Gela, Sicily. Ht 10cm; diam. 12.3cm.

Reconstructed from fragments without repainting. The vase is somewhat misfired and the glaze has flaked from the area of the upper wall and handle on one side. The inner and outer surfaces are completely covered with paint. The inner face of the foot is black but the resting surface and the underside of the floor are reserved and the latter decorated with two small circles and a central dot. The reserved areas are reddened.

Perhaps about 420 BC: cf. B.A. Sparkes and L. Talcott, The Athenian Agora xii: Black and Plain Pottery (Princeton 1970) pl. 16, 345-347. Compare the shape of the 1965.10 in this catalogue. For this type of skyphos, see the text to 1966.03 (skyphos of Corinthian type).

See 1966.01-1966.42 in this catalogue for all material from the Woite Collection in the ANU collection.
