Bronze coin (Æ 18) of uncertain date - Claudian or Neronian
4.27 g. AD 41-68. Philippi
Obv.: Statue of Victory (Nike). l., with wreath and palm branch, on a base. VIC(toria) AVG(usti).
Rev.: Three military standards, COHOR(s) PRAE(toria) PHIL(ippensis).
According to RPC I there are two ‘pseudo-autonomous’ coin issues from Philippi, one of which is this issue. Both types refer to the battle of Actium and the subsequent settlement of veterans. These issues used to be assigned to the reign of Augustus. However they were struck in copper, rather than bronze. Copper is not found in the region until the reign of Claudius and a Claudian-Neronian date is suggested.
