Campanian Black-Glaze Bowl

Purchased. Ht 6.3cm; diam. 18.5cm.

Intact and in good condition save for some minor scratching and wear. Pale brown clay; dull but consistent black glaze. In the centre of the bowl is an impressed design of five linked palmettes with a star rosette in the centre. The underside is reserved and has a strong red wash over the clay.

The clay and glaze are typical of Campanian fourth-century material. While it is not yet possible to isolate the manufacturing centres of black-glaze with certainty, there are five examples of very similar type in Michigan (Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum pl. 32, 30-34) that are said to be from Cumae and such a source would not be improbable. Later part of the fourth century BC.
