Obv.: Head of Claudius l., bare. TI(berius) CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG(ustus) P(ontifex) M(aximus) TR(ibunicia) P(otestate) IMP(erator) P(ater) P(atriae).

Rev.: Constantia standing l., helmeted, in military dress, right hand raised, spear in left hand. CONSTANTIAE AVGVSTI. In field, S(enatus) C(onsulto).

Constantia, is the personification of consistency (constancy, persistence, endurance). This reverse was a new type instituted by Claudius though it was a virtue not always associated with him. It appears on his coins in several guises (military and domestic).

Claudius became Pontifex Maximus (head priest) early in AD 42.
