Cypriot Jug

From Cyprus. Given by Mr Richard J.G. Hall. Ht 8.2cm; diam. 4.9cm.

Much of the lip is missing. Smoothly-finished hard grey-buff clay with dark inclusions, probably with a self-slip. The flat base is slightly offset; the handle is of roughly circular section. There is a band of paint round the edge of the lip and another round the neck. On the handle is a zigzag between lines and terminated by bars below. On the shoulder are two sets of compass-drawn concentric circles. There are bands on the wall below.

In the standard classification, the jug belongs to White Painted Ware IV: cf. Swedish Cyprus Expedition (Stockholm - Lund 1934-1972) IV 2, fig. XXVIII type lOa-b. The shape also appears in Bichrome Red I (IV) (Swedish Cyprus Expedition (Stockholm - Lund 1934-1972) IV 2, fig. XLI, 8) and in Bichrome IV ware (J.L. Benson, The Necropolis of Kaloriziki [Studies in Mediterranean Archaeology 36, Göteborg 1973] 47, jug type 3, and pl.33, K 528) which are probably contemporary. See also the references quoted by Webb.

Cypro-Archaic I; perhaps seventh century bc. Acquired in Cyprus by John Venables Hall in 1942.
