Cypriot Round-Mouthed Jug

Cyril Henry Leach Bequest by courtesy of the Trustees of the British Museum; from Cyprus. Ht (lip) 6.6cm; diam. 7.2cm.

Intact though somewhat worn about the lip. Orange-buff clay with dark inclusions, seemingly with a cream slip. Globular body with flattened base; short concave neck and everted lip with rounded edge. The handle runs from lip to shoulder, rising somewhat above the level of the lip; it is of roughly circular section.

Small round-mouthed jugs of this general type were popular in the Hellenistic period in many areas of the Mediterranean such as Sicily and Central Italy as well as Cyprus. For this example compare Swedish Cyprus Expedition IV, 3, fig. 23, 15 (=Swedish Cyprus Expedition I, pl. CXL, 7) which is simply classified as ‘Hellenistic’.
