Denarius of Antoninus Pius

3.372 g. AD 158-159

Obv.: Head of Antoninus r., laureate, bearded. ANTONINVS AVG(ustus) PIVS P(ater) P(atriae) TR(ibunicia) P(otestate) XXII.

Rev.: Fortuna standing front, head left, draped, with cornucopiae in left hand and patera (shallow dish for offerings) in right above rudder on prow.  FORTVNA OPSEQVENS. In exerge, CO(n)S(ul) IIII.

For most of his reign Antoninus regularly numbered the annual renewals of tribunician power, thus the figure 22 gives a firm date. His fourth and last consulship was in AD 145.

Fortune on the reverse is conceived of as being “compliant” to Antoninus’ will.
