Denarius of Crispina, reign of Commodus
3.229 g. AD 180-183
Obv.: Bust of Crispina r., draped, hair crimped at side of face, waved and drawn back in chignon on neck. CRISPINA AVGVUSTA.
Rev.: Juno standing l., veiled, draped, with sceptre in left hand and patera (shallow dish for offerings) in right. IVNO.
Crispina, wife of Commodus, was granted the title ‘Augusta’ on her marriage in AD
178. She was disgraced and banished during Commodus’ reign — probably in AD 183, through implication in Lucilla’s conspiracy.
Juno was one of the major Roman goddesses associated also with other imperial women of the Antonine period.
