Denarius of Elagabalus

2.786 g. AD 221-222

Obv.: Bust of Elagabalus r., laureate, draped, bearded. IMP(erator) ANTONINVS PIVS AVG(ustus).

Rev.: Elagabalus standing r., togate (wearing a toga), sacrificing over lighted altar, holding patera (shallow dish for offerings) in right hand and club in left. In field, star. SACERD(os) DEI SOLIS ELAGAB(ali).

On Elagabalus see 1966.55. He here adds the further Antonine name ‘Pius’.

On the reverse he identifies himself as ‘the priest of the Sun-god Elagabalus’.

Robertson dates the reverses with a star to AD 221-222, ‘with the growing influence of eastern religion’.
