Denarius honouring Faustina the Younger, reign of Marcus Aurelius
3.33 g. AD 176
Obv.: Draped bust of Faustina the Younger, r., hair waved and drawn back into chignon. DIVA FAVSTINA PIA.
Rev.: Peacock standing r., head turned back l., tail falling behind. CONSECRATIO.
Faustina, wife of Marcus Aurelius, died late in AD 175 on tour with her husband in the East. She was declared deified there, but the coins issued from Rome celebrating her deification will have dated from AD 176 and the full consecration ritual there.
The peacock was especially associated with Juno, queen of the gods, whom Faustina has now joined. There is a fable by Aesop about Juno and the peacock.
