Denarius of L. Antestius Gragulus

3.818 g. 136 BC

Obv.: Head of Roma helmeted r. On left, GRAG(ulus), on right X̄. Border of dots.

Rev.: Jupiter in quadriga r. (four-horse chariot). With thunderbolt in r. hand and sceptre in left. Below, L(ucius) AE(ANTE)S(tius). In exergue, ROMA.

This is the typical obverse of the denarius for most of the second century BC. The quadriga is rather archaic in style with the eight rear legs of the horses all shown. L. Antestius Gragulus is known only from the coins which he issued. He was the first moneyer to use the sign * to denote the new denarius equal to 16 asses instead of 10.
