Denarius of Lucilla, reign of Marcus Aurelius
2.842 g. AD 166-169
Obv.: Bust of Lucilla r., draped, hair waved and drawn back in coil on neck. LVCILLA AVGVSTA.
Rev.: Pudicitia seated l., draped, veiled, with right hand across breast, left hand on stool. PVDICITIA.
Lucilla, daughter of Marcus Aurelius, was granted the title ‘Augusta’ on her marriage to Lucius Verus (Marcus’ co-emperor) in AD 164. This coin probably pre-dates Lucius’ death in AD 169.
‘Modesty, Womanly Virtue’ (Pudicitia) is typical of the personifications associated with imperial women in the second century.
