Denarius of Plautilla, reign of Septimius Severus

3.229 g. AD 202

Septimius Severus married his elder son Caracalla to Plautilla in AD 202. Although the reverse celebrates the ‘everlasting harmony’ of this marriage, relations between the two were strained. Plautilla was exiled in AD 205 after the discovery of her father’s plot against the emperor. She was put to death in AD 211 when Caracalla became emperor.
