Denarius (serrate) of L. Cosconius

3.300 g. 118 BC

Obv.: Head of Roma helmeted r. From lower right, L(ucius) COSC̣Ọ(nius) M(arci) F(ilius) X.

Rev.: Naked warrior in a biga (two-horse chariot) r., hurling a spear with right hand and holding a carnyx (Gallic tumpet) and shield in left.  In exergue, L(ucius) LIC(inius) CN(aeus). DOṂ (itius).

Serrati were suited to Gallic circulation, and this coin was minted in Narbo.

L. Licinius Crassus and Cn. Domitius Ahenobarbus were censors in 92 BC and consuls in 95 and 96 BC respectively, but they are mentioned here as commissioners for the establishment of the colony of Narbo (modern Narbonne). The father of Cn. Domitius defeated the Gallic chieftain Bituitus in 120 BC, a victory which led to the foundation of Narbo. The warrior on this reverse may be Bituitus.
