Four Iron Arrowheads.

Purchased. Perhaps from Britain.

Three are of square section (length 6.8cm; 6.2cm; pres. length 5.2cm), one narrow ovoid (pres. length 7.6cm). The last is in fragmentary condition and two of the others have lost the end of the haft. They are corroded but now stabilised.

Arrowheads such as this are almost impossible to date; it is difficult too to determine regional styles. For some useful observations, see M.C. Bishop and J.C.N. Coulston, Roman Military Equipment from the Punic Wars to the Fall of Rome (second ed., Oxford 2006).

For a selection from Vindolanda, see R. Birley, Vindolanda Research Reports. New series, 4, fasc. 1, The Weapons (Greenhead 1996) 8-9 and 19-24.

Purchased from a local private collector.
