Fragment of Roman Wall-Painting - 1978.06

Acquisition number: 1978.06

The fragment has a vase standing on a cornice, a piece of cloth (a cloak?) draped over it and a branch leaning against it. The upper part is on a white ground. The vase is basically grey-green with shadows in brown and highlights in gold. The cloth or cloak is grey with grey-green tinges and on the right has crimson for the interior or lining. The branch is grey-green tending to yellow towards the bottom. The cornice is deep yellow with brown shadows and with other details in vermilion and white. The painting of the wall below is vermilion. The surface is fairly well preserved with only minor retouching along the cracks.

The fragment has a vase standing on a cornice, a piece of cloth (a cloak?) draped over it and a branch leaning against it. The upper part is on a white ground. The vase is basically grey-green with shadows in brown and highlights in gold. The cloth or cloak is grey with grey-green tinges and on the right has crimson for the interior or lining. The branch is grey-green tending to yellow towards the bottom. The cornice is deep yellow with brown shadows and with other details in vermilion and white. The painting of the wall below is vermilion. The surface is fairly well preserved with only minor retouching along the cracks.

The fragment is a typical detail from Fourth Style wall-painting with the vase standing on top of a wall beyond which is open space. Third quarter of the first century AD.
