Half-Centenionalis of Constantius Gallus
2.43 g. AD 351-354
Obv.: Head of Constantius Gallus, r., D(ominus)N(oster) CONSTANTIUS NOBCAES.
Rev.: Soldier spearing fallen horseman, FEL(icium or ix)TEMP(orum) REPARATIO.
Constanius Gallus was appointed Caesar in the east by Constantius II in 351 (hence DN, dominus noster). He clashed with imperial officials in Antioch, was recalled (354) to Constantius’ court in Milan, but was deposed and executed en route near Pola.
The turmoil of the times is well reflected in the reverse type, but hardly in the legend ‘The restoration of happy times’ or ‘A happy restoration of the times’.
Mint is uncertain: see Sear, Roman Coins and their Values 1988, 4054, Wildwinds, Constantius Gallus, Siscia 351.
