Lebes Gamikos.

The lid is missing but the piece is otherwise intact. High knobbed handles. The shoulder is somewhat depressed.

A: An Eros seated left on a rock with a dish in his right hand. In the field is a rosette and a sash with added white decoration, now worn.

B: A woman seated left on a rock with a tambourine in her right hand and a wreath in her left. In the field are rosettes and ivy-leaves. Note that the painter omitted to black in the triangular area between the tambourine and the woman’s face.

There are tongues on the handle roots and a tongue pattern on the shoulder. There are palmette designs below the handles. Below the scenes and running round the vase, wave pattern. Reserved are the stem between body and foot, a band on the upper face of the foot and the underside. There is no wash inside the vase.

For a thorough discussion of the shape as it appears in the various South Italian fabrics and of the range of subjects of their decoration, see the study by Cassimatis (below).
