Roman Lamp, side.

The surface is worn and badly incrusted; the handle is missing. Pale brown clay with small white inclusions and many small voids. There is a ridge around the oil-hole, then, on the shoulder, a wreath. The wick-hole is slightly raised and blackened. There is a strong carination at the junction of shoulder and wall. The lower part is wheel-made, with ring foot, the upper part mould-made, and the two parts are unevenly aligned.

Doubtless from somewhere in the northern provinces; second century AD.

Written on the underside in ink: 1974.356.33.

Donated by the British Museum in 1973 as part of the Cyril Henry Leach Bequest. Bequest was not made specifically to the ANU but was made generally to "Museums or University teaching collections where they would be displayed, used and much appreciated" and was to be executed through the British Museum. Objects from the bequest were given to the ANU when Reader in Classics K L McKay asked the British Museum if they were able to pass on material which could supplement the ANU's teaching collection.
