Sicilian Globular Squat Lekythos

From the Woite Collection; probably from the area of Gela, Sicily. Ht 6cm; diam. 5.5cm.

Intact. Pinkish buff clay. Globular body with broad flat base. The vase was dipped in glaze to cover the upper half of the vase but the air pressure prevented the glaze from entering far within the mouth. Most of the glaze has now worn away.

The form of the mouth, which is of cup type, may suggest a date in the sixth century BC.

See 1966.01-1966.42 in this catalogue for all material from the Woite Collection in the ANU collection.
