Squat Lekythos
From the Woite Collection; probably from the area of Gela, Sicily. Ht 6.2cm; diam. 3.7cm.
Intact but much of the glaze has fired khaki and is worn and flaking. The foot has a groove on the outer face.
The outside is entirely painted but for two reserved bands on the wall and the vertical face of the foot. The underside is reserved.
Probably Attic of the earlier part of the fourth century BC, but see S.R. Woolf et al., “Classical and Hellenistic Black Glaze Ware in the Mediterranean: A Study by Epithermal Neutron Activation Analysis”, Journal of Archaeological Science 13, 1986, 245, for black glaze of Attic appearance from Motya which has been shown to be of Sicilian manufacture.
For comment on the shape of lekythoi see 1966.34.
See 1966.01-1966.42 in this catalogue for all material from the Woite Collection in the ANU collection.
