Tetradrachm of Tiberius
2.624 g. AD 26-27
Obv.: TIBEPIOΣ KAIΣAP [ΣEBAΣTOΣ].
In front, LIΔ.
Rev.: Head of Augustus l., radiate. ΘEOΣ ΣEBAΣTOΣ.
Minted in Alexandria. The obverse legend is the Greek form of ‘Tiberius Caesar Augustus’. The inscription in front of the head signifies ‘the fourteenth year’ (of Tiberius’ reign), i.e. between August AD 26 and August AD 27. The reverse legend is the Greek form of ‘Diuus Augustus’.
Tiberius continued Augustus’ bronze coins at Alexandria but also began a new series, tetradrachms made of billon (a copper-silver alloy). The radiate head of the deified Augustus is the reverse on all Tiberius’ tetradrachms.
