Minoan Juglet

From Knossos; presented by the Trustees of the British Museum. Max. ht 8.1cm; diam ca 5.3cm.

The handle is missing but was of simple strap form. Round mouth; flat cut-away base. Soft pale orange-buff clay with small dark red inclusions. The vase is unpainted and poorly thrown.

Plain pieces such as this and the dish 1973.14 were found in large numbers in the Middle Minoan III deposits of the Palace at Knossos; for a discussion of such pottery, most of which seems to have been excavated in the North East Magazines, see A.J. Evans, Palace of Minos (London 1921) I, 568-590.

Minoan juglet

Wheel-made; from the Palace at Knossos

Plain pieces such as this and the dish 1973.14 were found in large numbers in Middle Minoan III deposits at the Palace of Knossos. The palace, for approximately five centuries (c. 2000 - 1500 BC), was a storage and distribution centre for food produced in the region.
