Sicilian Banded Squat Lekythos
From the Woite Collection; probably from the area of Gela, Sicily. Ht 8.4cm; diam. 6.5cm.
Intact. Pink-buff clay. Ring foot. Brown paint. The vase has a band of paint on the top of the lip and two on the outer face; two bands on the body; one down the outer face of the handle.
The plump form of the body and the profile of the mouth suggest a date in the later fifth century BC. One may compare a similar piece from Corinth dated to the third quarter of the century, Corinth XIII, pl. 61 no. 378/3.
See 1966.01-1966.42 in this catalogue for all material from the Woite Collection in the ANU collection.
