Sicilian Black-Glaze Ladler
From the Woite Collection; probably from the area of Gela, Sicily. Ht (lip) 5.5cm; diam. 6.5cm.
Yellow-buff clay. Globular body with short, sharply offset lip. The vase originally had a high handle, now missing. The upper part was dipped in dull black paint, now worn.
This shape too was a common household item in sixth and fifth century Sicily; it is also frequent in Etruscan black glaze and plain wares of the fifth and fourth centuries. See Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei 1971, 572 fig. 49, 61389 and Notizie degli Scavi di Antichità, Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei 1969 suppl., 57 fig. 77d (fifth century).
See 1966.01-1966.42 in this catalogue for all material from the Woite Collection in the ANU collection.
