Sicilian Black-Glaze Skyphos
From the Woite Collection; probably from the area of Gela, Sicily. Ht 5.3cm; diam. 7.7cm.
Intact but the surface is somewhat worn. Rather khaki clay; brown to black paint, flaking. The vase was painted by dipping and by swirling the glaze inside the vase.
There are cracks in the bottom from drying or firing that would have rendered the vase useless for practical purposes, and it must therefore have been sold as a grave offering.
Perhaps second half of the fifth century BC.
See 1966.01-1966.42 in this catalogue for all material from the Woite Collection in the ANU collection.
