Sicilian Plain Miniature Lekanis
From the Woite Collection; probably from the area of Gela, Sicily. Ht 3.4cm; diam. 8.9cm.
Intact. Cream-buff clay. Spurred band handles; the lip is grooved on the outside. Unpainted. There is no lid.
The vase is too small for household use and was probably made for the grave where such vases are regular offerings. Compare the form of the Boeotian 1976.11, the Apulian 1965.3l and the Sicilian red-figure 1976.12. Although one might not expect such a small example to have a stemmed foot like the last two, both of the later fourth century, this does not have the angular treatment of the wall either, and it is in general closer to the Boeotian example. It is therefore probably to be dated to the later fifth or earlier fourth century.
On the use of miniature vessels in sanctuaries and tombs, see the comments under Sicilian Black, Banded and Plain.
See 1966.01-1966.42 in this catalogue for all material from the Woite Collection in the ANU collection.
