Australian and Papuan languages
We are seeking enthusiastic students to assist with research, data management and analysis of Australian Indigenous languages and a Papuan language. Depending on the student's skills and research interests, several linguists may be involved in supervision. Tasks may include:
- Assisting with voice and video transcriptions in ELAN
- Becoming familiar with the basic sound system, word structure and sentence structures of another language.
- Modifying and implementing a workflow for creating digital audio-visual dictionaries.
- Working on child language interaction
- Design, development and analysis of a multidimensional Multilanguage corpus (dimensions of time, genre, mode and speaker)
- Working on a language app
- Language reclamation
- Working on finding cognates between languages
The student will gain knowledge of Australian Indigenous languages or a Papuan language, and skills in language data management which may lead to a potential research area for development in postgraduate study.
This project would suit:
a. students with a strong background in linguistics. A background in computer science, corpus linguistics, and Australian Indigenous languages would be helpful.
and/or
b. Indigenous students (especially Muruwari, Warlpiri, Warumungu, Dharug, WakkaWakka, Wardaman, Jawoyn people and Kriol speakers) keen to learn more about their languages
