Spanish
Spanish - study overseas
There is no better way to learn a new language than being immersed in the language and its cultural setting on a daily basis. Being in a university setting, and studying courses in the language with other speakers of that language, will benefit you linguistically, academically, personally, career-wise and cross-culturally.
Credit towards your ANU degree
You can get credit for your Spanish major by taking courses where the focus of study is the Spanish language, or that cover other areas related to the Spanish-speaking world, such as linguistics, literature, history, politics and culture. You can also complete courses towards the rest of your degree (generally electives rather than core courses).
Timing and prerequisites
The best time to go on exchange and the type of courses you should take depend on your knowledge of Spanish language and culture, but the majority of students go in the first semester of their third year of study.
In order to study successfully in a Spanish-speaking-language environment, you must have sufficient language skills. There are two ways you can meet the prerequisites for Spanish. At the time of departure, you must be able to demonstrate:
- SPAN3001 (Intermediate Spanish I), with a minimum grade of Credit
OR:
- SPAN2002 (Continuing Spanish II) + one other course (e.g. SPAN2102, or other thematic),
with a minimum grade of Distinction in both
You will need to obtain a language approval form signed by the Spanish language convenor; this can indicate that you have already met the prerequisites, or that you are on track to do so by time of departure.
