Authentic Japanese newspaper materials for beginners: Tasks as assessable assignments

Presented by Shun Ikeda as part of the ANU Language Teaching Forum
Authentic newspapers in any language are usually considered to be learning materials for advanced students or at least for upper intermediate students, especially in non-alphabet based languages, e.g., character-based languages such as Chinese and Japanese. The tasks assigned to students to attempt are, in a way, a kind of puzzles or quizzes for fun-learning. The aims are two-fold. Firstly, students’ inquisitive senses are stimulated by the assigned tasks. Secondly, students will gradually familiarise themselves with authentic Japanese newspapers so that they won’t have daunted feelings when they will be given more meaningful tasks on newspapers at a later stage of their learning.

The ANU Language Teaching Forum (LTF) provides a discussion platform for language teachers and researchers across ANU colleges. Its main objective is to enhance the exchange of research and new approaches in language education. The forum is also open to interested people from outside the university such as school teachers and teachers from community schools.
This forum is jointly coordinated by the College of Arts & Social Sciences (the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics and the Centre for Arab & Islamic Studies) and the College of Asia & the Pacific (the School of Culture, History & Language).
