Summer Scholars Program

Unfortunately the Summer Scholars program will not be running in late 2024/early 2025. We hope to call for applications in future and will update this website when circumstances permit. The information below is for reference only.

The Australian National University (ANU) intends to offer Summer scholarships for the period 2023-2024 to students enrolled in undergraduate or masters coursework degrees in Australia or New Zealand.

What is the Summer Scholars Program?

A Summer Research Scholarship (SRS) (for non-ANU students) or Summer Research Internship (SRI) (for ANU students) is an exceptional research opportunity for undergraduate and masters coursework students, providing insight into what studying for a graduate research degree is all about. The scholarship or internship package gives you the opportunity to stretch your boundaries by undertaking research projects and activities during the summer.

The SRS scholarship provides board and accommodation at Burgmann for 9 weeks (including the Christmas shutdown period), and a stipend of $150/week, along with up to $1000 for travel costs.

The SRI scholarship provides a stipend of $400/week.

Applications for this year's program will open from July 1st and close COB on the 31st August 2023

The nine-week program will run between 20th November 2023 to 19th January 2024, with a week off for the Christmas break.

The scholarships will be awarded on merit and fit with project. Equity-based adjustments may be made for Indigenous students or for other reasons aligned to the Education Access Scheme (Equity) Adjustment Schedule.

NOTE: Relevant Research Centre is: Research School of Humanities and Arts [College of Arts and Social Sciences]

Please include in your application:

  • a 250 word expression of interest, outlining how you plan to contribute to the project you wish to work on. Include the research questions or focus you might like to take, with some contextualisation in the relevant literature, and an indication of the skills and knowledge you would bring to the project
  • a copy of your CV and academic transcript.

Please indicate your citizenship on your CV, as some scholarships may be funded by the Australian Signals Directorate and can only go to Australian citizens, along with the names of at least one, and preferably two academic referees who are familiar with your academic work.

If accepted, your supervisor will work with you to finalise a research plan for your work over the period of the scholarship, based on this proposal. Please contact the director of the relevant project if you require more information.
