'The Maids' by Jean Genet, translated by Martin Cramp

Two sisters, Solange and Claire, are maids to their wealthy, glamorous mistress in a big city apartment. When their Madame is out they pass time in her luxurious bedroom in an obsessive game of roleplaying ‘servant and mistress’ blurring reality and fantasy. Acting out the power structures which define their lives suddenly an impossible idea becomes a shocking tangible reality. Two Maids, one Mistress – a devious triangle of love, hatred and disgust.

The Street Theatre Company’s bewitching production of The Maids, Jean Genet’s 20th century gripping classic and psychological thriller. Considered by many to be one of the most moving works in the modernist repertory, French novelist and dramatist Jean Genet scandalised generations with his provocative work of power, identity and rebellion. Featuring a powerhouse ensemble cast of outstanding women making their debut on The Street stage, The Maids opens at The Street Theatre on 24 May through 8 June 2025.
