Book Launch: 'Art and Human Rights: Contemporary Asian Contexts'

Book launch presented by the Humanities Research Centre (ANU School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics) in association with the Centre for Art History and Art Theory (ANU School of Art) and the Centre for Creative and Cultural Research (Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra)

Art and Human Rights: Contemporary Asian Contexts
Caroline Turner and Jen Webb, published by Manchester University Press

This book focuses on contemporary Asian art through the lens of human rights discourse and practice. It explores the contexts for art including the impacts of decolonisation and globalisation, war, divided societies and the role of art in worldmaking.

The artists are those with a history of significant political activism, those whose work consistently reflects on or gives witness to human rights abuses and those who explore ethical relationships with others and with the natural environment. Art and Human Rights makes explicit the contributions of Asian artists within and beyond their region to these enduring issues of humanity.

Caroline Turner is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the Humanities Research Centre, ANU. Jen Webb is Director of the Centre for Creative and Cultural Research in the Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra.

RSVP by 7 March. For further information please contact Colette Gilmour, via colette.gilmour@anu.edu.au.
