German - study overseas

Study in Germany or Austria

The German Studies Program encourages its students to study at one of the ANU’s partner universities in Germany or Austria. Students will benefit in many ways from an exchange: linguistically, academically, personally, career-wise, and cross-culturally. Find more information on ANU Global Programs.

Course offerings

German-speaking universities offer three different types of courses for exchange students:

A.  Regular courses offered in German: To get credit for their German Studies major students should choose courses which are associated with the discipline of German Studies, i.e. courses in linguistics, literature, history, politics, culture, etc., all related to the German-speaking countries.

B. German language and culture courses:
B1: "studienbegleitend" (accompanying);
B2: "studienvorbereitend" (preparatory). Intensive preparatory courses are only offered at Konstanz, Wuppertal and Bonn.

C. Thematic courses for international and exchange students offered in German, e.g. Post-war German history.

Language Prerequisites

Exchange students who are going to study in a foreign language environment need to meet minimum language requirements which enable them to successfully study at the host university. To go on an exchange to a German-speaking country, students must be at least at an intermediate level.

The best time to go on exchange as well as what kind of courses (A, B1, B2 or C) a student should attend depends on his/her knowledge of German. The majority of students go in their third year on exchange.

Students who wish to attend regular courses (Type A) must have either completed Advanced German 1 (GERM3007) or Advanced German 2 (GERM3008) at a Distinction level or better before departure.

Students who still need to attend intensive German language and culture courses (Type B2) must have either completed Intermediate German 1 (GERM2105) or Intermediate German 2 (GERM2106) at a Distinction level or better before departure.
