Creative Writing

In creative writing courses, you will write poetry, fiction, play scripts and screenplays. You will read and analyse recent and contemporary published writing to develop a capacity for reading carefully and critically.

Courses include an introductory unit on the writing of short fiction and poetry, and courses in advanced fiction writing and scriptwriting.

All courses use a workshop model, in which your work will be discussed and developed. You will have the opportunity to make editorial suggestions for peers’ poetry, prose and scripts as well as reflect critically on your own creative writing. Experimentation with style and form is encouraged.

Courses include discussion of editing, publishing and production processes.

Creative writing courses can be taken as part of an English Major or Minor, or as an elective.

Career Options

Graduates of the Bachelor of Arts with a major in English develop skills in critical reading, research and analysis, strong written and spoken communication and imaginative thinking.

Former students of English and creative writing at ANU have established careers in government policy, education, the media, journalism, creative arts and publishing.

Recent alumni of creative writing courses at ANU include Christie Thompson, author of Snake Bite (Allen and Unwin, 2013), Emma Allen, winner of the Children’s Book Council Award in the Early Childhood Category for The Magic Suitcase (2013) and Will Small, winner of the Radio National Wildcard for the Australian Poetry Slam National Final (2013).
