Study overseas

There is no better way to learn a new language than being immersed in the language and its cultural setting on a daily basis.

The Italian Language Studies program provides students with the opportunity to study at one of our partner universities in Italy. Find more information on ANU Global Programs.

Students will benefit in many ways from an exchange – linguistically, academically, personally, career-wise and cross-culturally.

Course offerings

Universities in Italy offer an extensive variety of courses for exchange students.

To receive credit for your Italian major, you should choose courses associated with the discipline of Italian Studies, and delivered and assessed in Italian. These may include courses such as linguistics, literature, history, politics, culture, cinema, musicology, or fine arts (mosaic etc.). The courses must be related to Italy, or to countries which have Italian as a national language (such as Switzerland) or for speaking and writing (such as Albania, Argentina, Australia, Somalia, and the United States).

We strongly advise that you consult the Italian Studies Convener to discuss the courses you wish to undertake during your exchange before enrolling at/or leaving ANU.

We recommend that you enrol in courses and study topics that are not offered at ANU and/or specialised courses that will strengthen your major.

You may wish to undertake one of the corsi intensivi di preparazione courses, or intensive preparatory revision courses, offered to international/exchange students before the beginning of the academic semesters. For information, visit the ANU Global Programs.

Prerequisites

The best time to go on exchange and the type of courses students should take depend on your knowledge of Italian language and culture.

In order to study successfully in a foreign-language environment, you must meet minimum language requirements.

To join the program in Italy, normally you would have already reached at least intermediate level (equivalent to the European Languages Framework B2).

Normally, when applying you must have completed Italian Studies - Intermediate I (ITAL3505) and completed Italian Studies - Intermediate II (ITAL3506) at a Distinction level before their departure.
