Minimum Language Requirements - French

Minimum requirements for exchange to all French-speaking universities (French-language stream) except Sciences Po. Note that we take into consideration your most recent French course in order to ensure your current level of language competency meets requirements.

  • Minimum of D in Intermediate French II (FREN3007); or,
  • Minimum of D in Advanced French (any post-FREN3007 course).

Minimum requirements for exchange to Institut d’Études Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris (French-language stream). Note that we take into consideration your most recent French course in order to ensure your current level of language competency meets requirements.

  • Minimum of HD in Advanced French (FREN3010, FREN3011, or other post-FREN3007 course) before departure.

Please note that the ANU requires students to have completed 48 units of study before their application to go on exchange can be considered. In addition to these minimum requirements, French universities reserve the right not to accept students who are below B2 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

If you intend to contact the Convener of French for a language approval form, please ensure that your email contains the following information:

  1. If you are a student of French at ANU, list the courses in French that you have successfully completed, including the course codes and the final mark you received for each course, for example:

    FREN3006 – 78 (D)

    FREN3007 – 82 (HD)

    FREN3010 – 80 (HD)

Please also verify before sending your email that your coursework results meet our requirements for exchange (outlined above). If they do not, you are not eligible to go on exchange.

  2. If you are not a student of French at ANU, you will need to have a DELF B2 certificate for us to confirm your level of French (C1 if you wish to study at Sciences Po). The Alliance Française offers DEFL and DALF examinations: http://www.afcanberra.com.au/adult-courses/french-diplomas/
