Monday 29 August 2022

The Embassy of France in Australia and the French Program, ANU are pleased to announce the launch of the inaugural Critiques de Film French Student Film Critic Prize.

Update October 12 2022: Round 5 now open! Enter by November 18. Find more information in attached poster.

Every two months throughout 2022, the committee will invite submissions for a public review of a French film of cultural value streaming on SBS. The successful review of each film will be published on the Embassy of France’s new website for French-Australian relations, sacreblue.org, and on ANU and French Embassy sites and social media.

Reviews must meet the following selection criteria:
- Be written in jargon-free English for a general film-loving audience, 650-700 words.
- Provide a spoiler-free introduction to the film, including key themes, strengths and drawbacks.
- Analyse the film’s engagement with French culture, history and/or identity, drawing on the
critic’s French studies to inform their understanding of the film and its context.

At the end of the year, the five published reviews will be entered into competition for a $2,000 cash prize to be used for travel to a French-speaking region for a study exchange, short course, internship or other academic or cultural trip.

The program is open to all currently enrolled undergraduate and postgraduate students of ANU who are enrolled in a course at any level in the French Program.

Eligibility and other questions can be directed to Dr Gemma King.
